The mission of the LCMA is twofold. On one hand, it intends to be a space to train archaeologists in archaeological science applications. Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminal Limited is a Company duly incorporated under the companies Act No. 17 of 1982 in terms of Section 2 (1) of the conversion of Public Corporations or Government owned business undertakings into Public Companies Act No. 23 of 1987, owns the Common User Facility (CUF) consisting of Oil Terminals, Storage Facilities, Pipelines and the Bowser Fleet, more fully described in the Government Gazette extraordinary bearing No. 1310-8 dated 13th October 2003.

The main Laboratory of CPSTL is located in Kolonnawa Installation, is the independent Laboratory for marketing companies and perform product quality assurance and issue certificates independently. Laboratory performs testing on every batch of receipts, every transfer of product and on products in every bulk delivery tank prior to release according to the specifications.

The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) is the apex national institute vested with the responsibility of carrying out and coordinating research, development and management activities on the subject of aquatic resources in Sri Lanka. The NARA is a statutory body duly established by NARA Act of No. 54 of 1981, during the past 41 years NARA conducted numerous scientific studies in the field of fisheries and aquatic resources. NARA also provides services for development and sustainable utilization of living and non-living aquatic resources.

Sri Lanka Institute of Textile & Apparel has been established after merging the two Institutes Textile Training & Services Centre and Clothing Industry Training Institute by Parliament Act No.12 of 2009. New Institute “SLITA” delivers study programmes that are being complied with the need of students in the Sri Lankan context at the same time keeping the Industry relevance. SLITA comes under the purview of Ministry of Industry & Commerce under the new Act is empowered to award diploma, degrees at graduate and postgraduate level.

Lanka Mineral Sands Ltd is the successor to Ceylon Mineral Sands Corporation which was established in 1957 under the Industrial Corporation act. The functions of the company are to do mining, processing and exporting of heavy mineral beach sands. In 1992 this corporation was converted as Lanka Mineral Sands Limited as a fully government owned company.

This company is controlled by the Minister of Industry and Commerce. The company Head office located at Colombo and processing plant is located in Pulmoddai in the eastern coast of Sri Lanka.

Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute (GJRTI) has been established in July 1995, under Section 25 (1) of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority Act. GJRTI is actively engaged in the business of providing Research and training services for the promotion and sustainable development of the Gem and Jewellery Industry.

The Industrial Development Board (IDB) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Industries. It is empowered by Industrial Development Act No.36 of 1969.In terms of this Act the IDB is the premier state organization entrusted with the responsibility of development of the Industrial Sector in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board (SLAEB) is a Statutory Body functioning under the State Ministry of Solar Power, Wind & Hydro Power Generation Projects Development which was established by the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Act No.40 of 2014. Nuclear Science and Technology has a wide range of applications in many fields that can make a significant contribution to the development of medical, agricultural, industrial, energy and environmental sectors in Sri Lanka. The SLAEB has the responsibility of facilitating the utilization of this technology in the above-mentioned sectors in Sri Lanka.

The Institute for Research and Development is an academic research institution which was established in 1997 as the Forum for Research and Development, and changed to Institute for Research and Development in 2000. It’s academic members include epidemiologists, psychiatrists, physicians, geneticists, veterinarians, public health specialists, ethicists, educationists, and people from many other disciplines. It has a full time research staff, and many other associates who are involved at various levels while employed in other academic institutions.

The Sugarcane Research Institute (SRI) is a statutory body established by the Act of Parliament no. 75 of 1981 (ratified on 29 December 1981), for conducting research on cultivation and processing of sugarcane to cater to technical and technological needs for the development of the sugar industry of Sri Lanka, which, until 1981 was undertaken by the Research and Development Division of the Sri Lanka Sugar Corporation (SLSC).The Institute was formally inaugurated on 29th April 1983 by then Minister of Agricultural Development and Research, Hon. GaminiJayasuriya. The SRI has been functioning as an independent institution since 1st January 1984 under the purview of several ministries, initially, under the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Research, and later, under the Ministries of Plantation Industries, Cooperatives, Supplementary Plantation Crop Development, Minor Export Crop Promotion and the Ministry of Sugar Industry Development. Presently, SRI is under the purview of the State Ministry of Development of Minor Crops Plantation including Sugarcane, Maize, Cashew, Pepper, Cinnamon, Cloves, Betel Related Industries and Export PromotionAt present, the SRI has several major programs of work, and conducts these through its sub stations, centres and laboratories. The institute’s main research complex is located at Uda Walawe. There is a liaison office at Battaramulla. In addition, there is a quarantine farm at Hantane, an arrowing station at Deniyaya and a pathology farm at Siyabalanduwa. There are four regional offices at Buttala, Siyabalanduwa, Badulla, and Hingurana where Development Officers have been posted to carryout dissemination of knowledge and technologies. In addition field offices have been established at Kantale and Kilinochchi to undertake activities for revitalisation of sugarcane industry in those areas.

In 1974 Eng. DLO Mendis , a planning ministry representative of the Industrial Development Board was request by Mr. Hector Abayawardana to plan out an Institution to bridge the gap between an Industrial extension service organization as IDB and scientific research institute as the CISIR. Eng. DLO Mendis wrote the cabinet paper, which was agreed by the Hon. Minister of Industries and scientific affairs T.B. Subasinghe .Thus the NERDC was in acted by an act of parliament under Special gazette Notification (No 124/6) was published under the Industrial Corporation Act No. 49 of 1957, on 14 August 1974. NERDC became operational during the latter part of 1974 , with as its first chairman. The centre was located from a Small section of the Industrial Development Board complex at Katubadda Moratuwa, with the intake of support staff as engineers and clerical grades, subsequently the office was locates at a more space building at Gall roar. Colombo-03. In September 1978 office was shifted to present location of IDB Industrial Estate Ekala Ja-Ela.

The Coconut Development Authority (CDA) of Sri Lanka is the statutory apex organization established under the provisions of the Coconut Development Act No. 46 of 1971. It is responsible to work for the development of the coconut industry in Sri Lanka and functions under the Ministry of Plantation Industries.

Veterinary Research Institute, administered by the Department of Animal Production and Health, is the sole government institution for conducting research and providing diagnostic and technical services, products and vaccines for the advancement of livestock sector in Sri Lanka.

The IIM is the premier Higher Educational Institute in Sri Lanka that provides instructions in Ayurveda, Unani and Indigenous system of medicine at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The college of Ayurveda was first started in the Island , subsequently upgraded and affiliated to the University of Colombo in the year 1977 as the Institute of Indigenous Medicine.IIM produces Medical professionals to meet the challenging needs of primary health care, general health care problems, health promotions and disease prevention.

The Department of Agriculture (DOA) is the premier national institute responsible for conducting agricultural research and development activities. The DOA is functioning under the Ministry of Agriculture. The objective of the DOA function is to modernize agriculture while focusing on increased productivity through the development and introduction of high-yielding varieties and improved all food crop husbandry technologies. To fulfill this requirement DOA has 4 main research institutes .covering the major food crop sector. They are Rice Research and Development Institute (RRDI), Bathalagoda, Horticultural Crops Research, and Development Institute (HORDI), Gannoruwa, Field Crops Research, and Development Institute (FCRDI), Mahailluppallama, and Fruit Crops Research and Development Institute (FRDI), Horana. Each Research Institute has regional research Institutes covering all agro-ecological zones. Accordingly, HORDI has the Regional Research Institute (RARDC), Bandarawela, RARDC, Thelijjawila, Agriculture Research Station (ARS), Sita Eliya . FCRDI has three regional research centers, RARDC, Aralaganwila, RARDC, Kilinochchi and Grain Legume and Oil Crops Research Center (GLORDC), Angunakolapalassa. FRDI has one regional Research Institute which is the Sustainable Crops Research and Development Institute (SARDC). Every research Institutes and research center has soil and compost analysis laboratory.

Coconut Research Institute of Sri Lanka (CRISL) is the world’s first research institute dedicated to research in coconut established in 1929. CRI conduct research related to the Coconut cultivation and processing.

Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) is the National Standards Body of Sri Lanka, established under the Bureau of Ceylon Standards Act No. 38 of 1964. The Institution functioned under the name of Bureau of Ceylon Standards until the Act was repealed and replaced by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution Act No. 6 of 1984. The Institution now functions under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Research and is governed by a Council appointed by the Minister in terms of the above Act.

SLSI by virtue of being the National Standards Body in Sri Lanka is a member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which is based in Geneva. As members of the ISO, National standards Bodies exchange on reciprocal basis copies of their National standards and is responsible for disseminating information on standards, technical regulations and standards related activities to the community at national level.

Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (RUSL) was established as the eleventh National University in Sri Lanka and was inaugurally opened on the 31st January 1996 as per the Gazette Notification 896/2 and the University act 16 of 1978.
