The Sugarcane Research Institute (SRI) is a statutory body established by the Act of Parliament no. 75 of 1981 (ratified on 29 December 1981), for conducting research on cultivation and processing of sugarcane to cater to technical and technological needs for the development of the sugar industry of Sri Lanka, which, until 1981 was undertaken by the Research and Development Division of the Sri Lanka Sugar Corporation (SLSC).The Institute was formally inaugurated on 29th April 1983 by then Minister of Agricultural Development and Research, Hon. GaminiJayasuriya. The SRI has been functioning as an independent institution since 1st January 1984 under the purview of several ministries, initially, under the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Research, and later, under the Ministries of Plantation Industries, Cooperatives, Supplementary Plantation Crop Development, Minor Export Crop Promotion and the Ministry of Sugar Industry Development. Presently, SRI is under the purview of the State Ministry of Development of Minor Crops Plantation including Sugarcane, Maize, Cashew, Pepper, Cinnamon, Cloves, Betel Related Industries and Export PromotionAt present, the SRI has several major programs of work, and conducts these through its sub stations, centres and laboratories. The institute’s main research complex is located at Uda Walawe. There is a liaison office at Battaramulla. In addition, there is a quarantine farm at Hantane, an arrowing station at Deniyaya and a pathology farm at Siyabalanduwa. There are four regional offices at Buttala, Siyabalanduwa, Badulla, and Hingurana where Development Officers have been posted to carryout dissemination of knowledge and technologies. In addition field offices have been established at Kantale and Kilinochchi to undertake activities for revitalisation of sugarcane industry in those areas.

In 1974 Eng. DLO Mendis , a planning ministry representative of the Industrial Development Board was request by Mr. Hector Abayawardana to plan out an Institution to bridge the gap between an Industrial extension service organization as IDB and scientific research institute as the CISIR. Eng. DLO Mendis wrote the cabinet paper, which was agreed by the Hon. Minister of Industries and scientific affairs T.B. Subasinghe .Thus the NERDC was in acted by an act of parliament under Special gazette Notification (No 124/6) was published under the Industrial Corporation Act No. 49 of 1957, on 14 August 1974. NERDC became operational during the latter part of 1974 , with as its first chairman. The centre was located from a Small section of the Industrial Development Board complex at Katubadda Moratuwa, with the intake of support staff as engineers and clerical grades, subsequently the office was locates at a more space building at Gall roar. Colombo-03. In September 1978 office was shifted to present location of IDB Industrial Estate Ekala Ja-Ela.

Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) is the National Standards Body of Sri Lanka, established under the Bureau of Ceylon Standards Act No. 38 of 1964. The Institution functioned under the name of Bureau of Ceylon Standards until the Act was repealed and replaced by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution Act No. 6 of 1984. The Institution now functions under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Research and is governed by a Council appointed by the Minister in terms of the above Act.

SLSI by virtue of being the National Standards Body in Sri Lanka is a member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which is based in Geneva. As members of the ISO, National standards Bodies exchange on reciprocal basis copies of their National standards and is responsible for disseminating information on standards, technical regulations and standards related activities to the community at national level.
